The British Franchise Association (bfa) and NatWest Bank conduct an annual survey, now in its 26th year, into the franchise industry in the UK. We listed below the key finds from the survey:

General

• There are 842 franchise systems in operation in the UK plus 3 diary franchises
• There are an estimated 34,800 franchise units.
• There are an estimated 465,000 people employed in franchising.
• 88% of franchisees claim to be profitable
• On average franchisees pay a 11.2% management services fees and 2.6% national marketing contribution of their annual turnover to their franchisors
• The three biggest sectors are: 1) Property Services 2)Personal Services 3)Business & Commercial Services

Relationships

• Relationships between franchisees and franchisors are healthy, with 76% reporting satisfaction in their dealings

International presence

• The number of British-run franchise systems with an international presence is 30%, with Europe being the favoured destination
• A further 25% of franchisors, not currently operating overseas, have plans to expand abroad

Profile of franchisees

• 79% of all franchisees are married
• 72% of franchisees are male
• The average age for franchisee is 47
• 82% were of white British ethnicity

Other

• Environmental: 41% of franchisors have take action to be more environmental over the last year.
